The Moon, Earth’s only natural satellite, is one of the most fascinating celestial bodies in our solar system. It has captured human imagination for centuries, inspiring countless myths, scientific discoveries, and space exploration missions. The Moon plays a critical role in shaping life on Earth, affecting tides, stabilizing the planet’s tilt, and influencing human culture.

The Moon formed approximately 4.5 billion years ago, likely as a result of a massive collision between Earth and a Mars-sized body known as Theia. This impact sent debris into Earth’s orbit, which eventually coalesced to form the Moon. Its surface is covered with craters, mountains, and vast plains called maria, which are the result of ancient volcanic activity. Unlike Earth, the Moon has no atmosphere, which means it experiences extreme temperature changes and its surface is exposed to meteoroid impacts.

The Moon’s gravitational pull is responsible for Earth’s ocean tides, creating a rhythmic ebb and flow that has shaped ecosystems and influenced human activities for millennia. It also stabilizes Earth’s axial tilt, which helps maintain a relatively stable climate. The Moon’s phases, from new moon to full moon, have been used to measure time for thousands of years, forming the basis of many ancient calendars. The Moon is just under 3,500 kilometers (km) wide. That’s over a quarter of the size of the Earth (about 12,600 km wide). Because of this, the Earth and Moon together are sometimes called a binary or double planet system.

Other planets also have moons or “natural satellites”. Earth’s only natural satellite is simply called “the Moon” because people didn’t know other moons existed until Galileo Galilei discovered four moons orbiting Jupiter in 1610. Other planets also have moons or “natural satellites”. Earth’s Moon is the only place beyond Earth where humans have set foot, so far.
